The Abbot Placid Spearritt Memorial Scholarship for 2020
The Abbot, the Community and the Archives Committee are delighted to announce that applications are being invited for the Abbot Placid Spearritt Memorial Scholarship, commencing next February. If you have an interest in a particular area of New Norcia’s history and would like to help “unlock” the archives so that your particular area may be shared by all, we would like to hear from you. The Scholarship runs for 12 months and is worth approximately $18,000.
Traditionally, scholarship work has revolved around translation from Spanish and Italian and, whilst opportunities still exist in these fields, more recent work has looked into the extensive map collection, the early photographs of W W Thwaites and Santos Salvado, and the engravers and engravings behind Salvado’s Memoirs and Bérengier’s 1877 history of New Norcia. You might be interested, for example, in the cathedrals that were planned for New Norcia over the years or, if you have Spanish, you might like to translate the 1849 – 1853 diary of Francisco Marsa whose diary has only recently been returned to New Norcia and which covers the years that Salvado was fund-raising in Europe and which remains untranslated.
If you are interested, contact the Archivist to discuss possibilities. We look forward to hearing from you.
Peter Hocking,
Archivist
PS. Applications close on August 31st.
