'Called to be True' – Spirituality with Thomas Merton One-Day Retreat
'In one sense, we are always traveling, and traveling as if we did not know where we were going. In another sense we have already arrived. (...) But oh! How far have I to go to find You in Whom I have already arrived!'
Thomas Merton, The Seven Storey Mountain
The next retreat day for the Thomas Merton series will be held on February 18th, with the theme, 'Called to be True'.
Out of his many books, New Seeds of Contemplation is the fruit of his life as a writer and monk. He shares his matured and tested thoughts and experiences about the heart of spirituality – contemplation. In doing so, he draws from the long monastic traditions, but is not aiming at religious people only. Every person is called to be true to their identity, in dialogue with the divine. No doubt, this book will go into history as one of the most important spiritual guides written.
On this retreat-day we will closely look into an important aspect of the spiritual journey according to Merton: God calls us to be True. Merton’s words are evocations for us to find the secrets of our own identity and fuels an urge towards being real. He calls this the gradual transformation of the false self into a true self. The spiritual process of the letting go of an external self, and embrace and surrender to a self that lives from the inside out.
The retreat will be in the Monastery, from 9.30am - 3.30pm, with morning and afternoon tea and lunch included. The reading texts for the day will be provided. The cost is $70, with numbers limited to 20.
